Desert ant
Posted in Insects
Description
Desert ants are adapted to dry and hot habitats such as deserts. The Cataglyphis velox lives in southern Europé and build their nests deep in soil or under stones. They are scavengers and feed on other insects which have succumbed to the heat stress. Desert ants use their vision for navigating and the routes are stored in long-term memory.
The compund eyes are composed of hundreds of lenses. Combined they form a single image in the ant’s brain. The desert ants use vision to navigate through their environment in search for food.
